Twilight: Finding Jesus Through the Gospel of John

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

In March we read the gospel of John. John wrote his gospel so that his readers would know and believe the claims of Jesus. Those who do have everlasting life here and now.

Bible Reading:

John 20:24–31

Bible Text:

These [miraculous signs] are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:31).

Devotional:

A Christian is someone who knows Jesus Christ and accepts his claims.

How do we get to know Jesus and his claims? By reading and believing John's gospel. John said he wrote in order "that you [dear reader] may believe" who Jesus is.

So we should read John's writing. Most people don't do that. They talk about the gospel of John, they listen to sermons about the gospel of John, but they will not read what John has written. The Bible is more talked about than read.

We must read and believe the message of John about Jesus. This book says that Jesus is the Christ (that is, the Messiah, the King who was promised to Israel ages ago) and that he is the Son of God. John records the testimonies of people and events, of the law and the prophets, of God and his works. All these witnesses must convince us that Jesus really is the man in whom we meet God.

Sometimes we are tempted to think it would have been easier to believe if we could have seen Jesus in the flesh. But it's unlikely that simply seeing him would have made believing easier. He looked like every other ordinary human being. It's only by his "signs," as John calls them—actions unlike anything other humans do—that we can be moved to believe that Jesus is indeed God-as-man and the man-from-God.

Reading will lead to believing. And knowing him is life.
