Monthly Theme:
These readings focus on the Holy Spirit. In the Old Covenant (or Testament), the Spirit "anoints" one person here and one there to perform a special work for God. In the New Covenant, the Spirit is "poured out" like rain on the whole church of Christ.
Bible Reading:
2 Corinthians 3:7–18
Bible Text:
We ... are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:18).
Devotional:
We are changing because the Holy Spirit lives in us. As we change, more of God and less of ourselves is going to show.
Moses, the mediator of the Old Covenant, was once very close to God on Mount Sinai. When Moses came down from that meeting with the Almighty, his face was so radiant that he had to put a veil over it when he talked to the people (Ex. 34:29–35). Paul uses this story to explain what is happening today in the New Covenant. The veil has now been removed, he says. Israel at Sinai was not ready for the unveiling because they were still under the law. But just as Moses could remove the veil from his face when he turned from the people to the LORD, so anyone who turns to the Lord Jesus today can see the unveiled glory of God.
Why are people in the New Covenant exposed to the unveiled glory of God when they accept Jesus as the Messiah? Because "the Lord is the Spirit." Where Jesus is, there is the Holy Spirit is, and where the Holy Spirit is, there is the glory of God.
Now we have come as close to God as Moses did on the mountain. We have not climbed up, but God has come down. God came down to us in Christ and stays with us in the Spirit. God is over us and for us and in us. We walk and talk and laugh and love in God's very presence. Slowly but surely, we are being transformed into God's own likeness.
