Twilight: Born to Love

the Rev. Andrew Kuyvenhoven

Monthly Theme:

Peter's first epistle is addressed to "strangers in the world," who have their homeland in heaven. They are not surprised that they suffer when they do what is right. They follow the footprints of Jesus.

Bible Reading:

1 Peter 1:22–23

Bible Text:

Love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again ... through the living and enduring word of God (1 Pet. 1:22–23).

Devotional:

This is the second time Peter talks about the new birth. The first time he said we were all born again when Jesus arose from the dead: We were given a "new birth into a living hope" (l Pet. 1:3). We began to live for a new future.

This time Peter does not mention the future or our heavenly inheritance. He talks about the character of the new life. It is divine life. It comes from God, who fathers us through the Word.

Regeneration—the new birth—is as mysterious as it is fascinating. The fundamental idea that a person can somehow participate in the life of God is not unique to the Christian religion. But two features of the new birth described in the Bible make this experience distinctively Christian. These features are the agent or instrument by which we are born again and the purpose for which this new life is given.

The instrument is God's good news. It brings the story of Jesus to our ears and God's life to our hearts. Through that Word, the imperishable seed, God regenerates human lives.

The purpose of our new and immortal life is to live in purity and to love the fellowship of others. Our new life does not make us mystics, individualists, or wonder-workers; it gives us the power to love.

''Love one another deeply ... for you have been born again"!
