Philippians is Paul's love letter. The epistle is also a good instrument for learning the secret of this great man. Paul considered living Christ and dying gain. And, although he wrote from a prison cell, his refrain was "Rejoice in the Lord always."

Bible Text:

My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19).

Devotional:

God has endless supplies and will look after your needs. He will "meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." He has it all, and he gives it all "in Christ." "In Christ" we receive all blessings—yes, God himself.

This thought still ties in with the matter of giving and receiving that Paul discussed with the church of Philippi. Together they had a partnership in God's mission. And Paul asserts that, since God has all the wealth in the universe, those who are God's partners will receive more than they give.

This truth has been abused. Those who are building religious empires always tell their donors that an investment in their company will make the givers rich. One wealthy fellow made a contribution that paid for a whole building with furnishings. People who knew the donor called this building "George's fire insurance." Of course, God knows as well as you and I when he gets a gift with strings attached.

But all the abuse in the world cannot alter the truth of this saying: God is generous with the generous. Our gifts to God never make us poorer. Our partnership with him guarantees a rich reward in this life and in the life to come—as long as we understand this covenant of grace on God's own terms.

My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. His grace be with your spirit.
