Do you take the time to meditate? Meditating should play a major role in our lives. Unlike meditation in other religions, Christian meditation does not focus on getting connected to the inner self. The subject of our meditation should be the Lord and the splendour of His majesty.

Meditating on God’s past deeds gives us confidence to face present day challenges and gives us hope for the future. Several psalms bring this to light. Consider the following: Psalm 1:1-2 says, “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.” In Psalm 63:6 the psalmist writes, “When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches.” Psalm 119:48, 97, 99 says, “My hands also I will lift up to Your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on Your statutes…Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation.”

Psalm 77 portrays the great blessing of meditating. Asaph is comforted in his present circumstances by contemplating God’s deeds for His people in the past. He writes, “I will remember the works of the LORD; surely I will remember Your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all Your work, and talk of Your deeds.”

The habit of regular Bible reading and meditation is foundational to the development of our Christian life. The more we read, study and even memorize Scripture, the more it will govern our conduct and shape our thinking. Meditating on God’s mighty deeds brings us closer to the Lord in our personal lives and in our understanding of the Lord’s ways with His people.

Meditating helps us to see the unseen footprints of God. Are you experiencing hardship or distress? Are you going through a spiritual low in your life? Take the time to reflect on the amazing work of God in the universe and in the life of His children. When the future looks bleak and dismal, the deeds of the Lord reveal that He will open a way. His work will go on! His love is unfailing; His mercy and grace will never end.
