The breakdown of marriage and family life is a clear manifestation of the secularization of our times. Claiming to be more open-minded, people suggest love is blind. Love is not associated with commitment, loyalty or a willingness to give of oneself for the sake of another. Many men and women don’t feel they need to be committed to each other for the rest of their lives. A family consisting of a Dad, Mom and children is now labelled “a traditional family”—something that at one time was considered normal.

In our society, but especially in our Western culture, things that were at one time confined to the bedroom and considered private are published across the air waves and shown on videos, television and via the Internet. Many movies and magazines leave men and women dissatisfied with their own relationships because a fantasy world offers more pleasure.

Who will say none of this influences us? Can everything you do, watch and read be classified under “Christian behaviour”? What if someone could enter your mind and expose your hidden thoughts? No wonder many parents feel uneasy and inadequate. How are they to guide and lead their children to see what is right and proper before the Lord in their teenage years, in courtship, in engagement and in marriage? You cannot expect young people to go through life with their eyes closed. But will they still seek and find each other in true love? In getting to know one another, and in living together in marriage, faith in God must come first.

As the story of the book of Ruth unfolds we are introduced to a fascinating love story. But the love Ruth has for Boaz isn’t superficial or sentimental. Boaz is introduced to Ruth as a man of faith—a man who has been blessed by the Lord and who uses these blessings in the right way. Similarly, we need to be known to each other as men and women of faith. Faith in God is what unites couples together in meaningful relationships. Such relationships advance God’s kingdom and edify Christ’s church.
