Devotional

Normally a redeemer could only bring relief to relatives who were still alive. Job, however, expected his Redeemer to act in a superhuman way and give him hope beyond the grave. He believes that his life will not be snuffed out once he breathes his last. Job confesses that he will see Him in whom he placed his hope and confidence. He will see the One he loved with all his heart.

Seeing God is more than physical seeing. It means experiencing God’s grace and favour. His countenance is not hid from us and we experience His mercy and love. All those who die in the Lord will not meet a stranger on the other side of the grave. They go to meet their Redeemer. On the last day believers will be judged by Him who is on their side!

Job was strong and he was comforted, even while sitting on the ash heap, because he expected everything from his Redeemer. And we may do the same but with greater certainty! Our Redeemer is the resurrected Lord of glory. Jesus is our sure defence and our living hope. He was punished for sins He did not commit. He suffered under the heavy wrath of God to save and redeem us from our sins.

Christ's redemption does not mean all misery, sorrow or even death vanishes at once. Yet in spite of all the negative things we experience we do not become desperate. Having the Redeemer near us we have no reason to fear. Sometimes circumstances may be such that we do not feel like getting out of bed in the morning to face a new day. Nevertheless, we will get through each day, not because we are capable and strong in ourselves, but because the Lord will not forsake the work of His hands. He will finish perfectly what He has started in our lives. Our Redeemer lives and He is on our side and at our side. That’s a promise of God we can count on.

Living in faith we can be certain that we will see Jesus as our Redeemer. He will stand beside us and present us to the Father. This is our comfort in sickness and death. Our Redeemer will take the bodies of believers, which have disintegrated into nothing more than a handful of dust, and He will vindicate them. What a beautiful sight that will be! How comforting! In our flesh we will see God!
