Devotional

Everything the Lord does in our lives is based on His wisdom and insight. His wisdom will be manifest in the final outcome of all His actions. Since true wisdom is to be found with God alone, and since He is the only One who has a perfect goal and plan, He has the right to determine what is good for us and what we need. We will never find correct answers or true solutions to our problems and anxieties outside of Christ.

Job directs us to this source in the first part of verse 28, “And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the LORD, that is wisdom...’” The Lord God Almighty said, “Behold.” In other words, make sure you pay close attention to the following statement. Realize that life must be controlled by the fear of the Lord.

To fear the Lord is to stand in awe of His majesty and to be afraid of His righteous anger over sin. The Lord is a loving Father and a consuming fire. We need to have a healthy respect for the Lord by trusting His promises and dreading His wrath. The fear of the Lord is our wisdom. When we live in humble submission to God’s will with a childlike trust, we are wise and we will know the way to life and the purpose of life. Wisdom which springs forth from the fear of God has only one motivation: to serve, please and obey God.

Sometimes we struggle to help a person faced with sudden loss. We do not know how to answer those who are troubled or caught in a web of anxiety. How do we help a teenager with suicidal tendencies to understand that there is far more to life than what meets the eye? We’d all agree: to deal with such difficult matters takes much tact and wisdom. The Lord gives us this wisdom in His Word. “For the Lord gives wisdom. From His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice, equity and every good path. When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you.” (Proverbs 2:6-11) Standing in awe of God, continue digging for treasures! The Bible is a book of wisdom pointing us to Christ, who in His suffering revealed the purpose and goal of life!
