The All-encompassing Work of the Mediator

Peter G. Feenstra

His flesh shall be young like a child’s, He shall return to the days of his youth. He shall pray to God, and He will delight in him, He shall see His face with joy, For He restores to man His righteousness. (Job 33:25–26)

Devotional

Elihu prophesies of what Jesus will do as the Mediating Angel. The Redeemer’s work produces amazing results. Sinners are raised to a new life which is ransomed and set free from the bondage of sin. The ransom given by the Mediator is all-encompassing and touches every aspect of life. Elihu says, “His flesh shall be young like a child’s, he shall return to the days of his youth.” (33:25) Through the work of redemption, flesh that was shrivelled by illness is renewed, looking healthy and young. With his health restored the suffering person can enjoy life again!

During His earthly ministry Jesus brings into focus the healing power of His atoning work. He heals the sick; He opens the eyes of the blind; His hand touches the ailing and they are made better. Jesus is not a magician but the messenger of the covenant. He makes whole all that was broken and blemished by sin.

Elihu also speaks of how the Mediating Angel opens the way to God’s throne, allowing sinners to enter His presence. “He shall pray to God, and He will delight in Him, He shall see His face with joy, for He restores to man His righteousness.” A believer can pray to the Lord and be sure he will be answered. He can behold the face of God with rejoicing. A ransomed person receives his righteousness again. He receives everything he needs to live before God and stand in His service.

Elihu’s words are not idle or empty. The words of Job 33:25-26 allow us to step forward into life with confidence and daily assurance. Our lives may be in shambles and the prospect of anything getting better may be out of the question for this life. Nevertheless, we have the word of Jesus who gave His life as a ransom for many. Dark clouds may hang over your life; you may feel lost and broken in spirit. Never forget what the Mediating Angel has said, “Deliver them from going down to the Pit. They are Mine! I paid for their life by giving My life as a ransom.” We have been released from guilt and punishment through Christ. Since Christ has freed us, who is there to bind us? Satan cannot, and neither can illness, loneliness, grief, disappointment or worry. That is why every difficulty and affliction should put us on our knees as we seek all things in the crucified Christ.
