Devotional

To know true happiness we need to learn how to think properly. If we embrace the thinking of a godless culture we miss out on true happiness and on an opportunity to tell the world where true blessedness is found. This is where the author of Psalm 1 takes us when he says in verse 2, “But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night.”

The “law” that regulates our thinking is not an impersonal set of regulations that limits our freedom, cramps our style, and threatens us with punishment. Although the law contains prohibitions, it is designed to be a source of life, a guide to wholeness and harmony. The word “law” refers to the instruction the Lord gives His people for their good.

A child of God who delights in the law of God takes great pleasure in studying the Scriptures. Since the righteous know they are completely dependent on Christ for their righteousness they take delight in receiving instruction from His Word. To know Christ in His person and work, in His mercy and grace, is delightful. The anticipation of His first and second coming gives the righteous joy and happiness. Yes, blessed is he who meditates on the instruction of the Lord both day and night. Such an individual learns how to live as a true child of God. He learns to live in humility and righteousness by constantly reflecting on the instruction of the Word of the Lord. You can only know what true peace, hope, justice and compassion is if you repeatedly turn your attention to the law.

Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, delighted in doing the will of His heavenly Father because He followed the counsel of God rather than that of man. Remarkably Christ sat with sinners. But He did not join them in their sins. He reached out to them by calling them to repentance. That same attitude must be with us who are grafted into Christ by faith. Rather than go along with sinners, we have a duty to call them to repentance, to join the culture headed by Christ. Such a culture is found in the congregation of the righteous, in the church of the Lord. By meditating on God’s law we develop our own culture and we no longer follow the thought patterns of a godless world. Pray that the Lord work in our hearts a strong desire to be in the right company and to delight in the instruction He provides.
