Ordained Strength

Peter G. Feenstra

You have ordained strength,
Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence the enemy and the avenger. (Ps. 8:2)

Devotional

Raising children is a beautiful but sometimes challenging task. It can be very taxing emotionally, mentally, physically and even financially. Mothers and fathers get tired of saying “Don't do this,” or, “Would you please do that?” Yet parents should not lose sight of what God is doing with their children. He is building a stronghold against the devil. Psalm 8 tells us that out of the mouth of children the Lord brings a confession which will silence the enemy. Such knowledge gives God-fearing mothers the strength to give birth to children and it gives parents the courage to train up their children in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6).

What a blessing it is when parents hear their children and their children’s children sing God’s praise. The whole church rejoices when another child is born into the covenant, and when children confess their complete dependence on the Lord. With that the Lord adds another block to His fortress against the enemy.

The LORD has ordained strength to come from the lips of children. This is why we need to be concerned about the well-being of the youngsters in the church—about their lifestyle, their education, their concerns and difficulties. Older members have a tremendous task. They can encourage young children to confess the majestic name of the Lord.

We tend to think that the church will withstand the devil if ministers and theologians oppose modern trends and false doctrine, if they know how to refute the enemy in the gate. But let’s never forget the power God has invested in the voice of children. Satan does not like listening to children singing about God’s love and grace. Little ones saying their bedtime prayers is a powerful attack against the devil.

Praise the Lord for the indications of His work of salvation in the children of the congregation. Encourage the new recruits in the battle of the Lord! Thank the Lord for children who wish to live according to the commandments of God, for young people who want to walk in His ways. Their songs and prayers are a powerful weapon against the devil.
