Most likely you are familiar with the fact that at the beginning of a book is a copyright statement. It will say, “All rights reserved. No part of this publication may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means without the prior permission of the author or publisher.” You find such copyrights on other products as well, such as computer programs, sheet music, farm machinery and auto parts. There are not very many things without a patent or a copyright. No one is to make a replica of a particular work and act as though it is their own. The owner reserves the right to say that this is their product.

Copyright laws become increasingly difficult to enforce in a society where it takes very little effort to download music and information off the Internet. Governments are left scrambling to adjust and modernize laws in our fast-paced digital world. Owners of intellectual property are provided with “technological protection measures” or digital locks to protect their material from being used without authorization.

According to the Bible, everything we use and consider to be our very own really belongs to the Lord. Psalm 24 says, “The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein.” The Lord owns this world and everything in it. He carries the copyright. He made it by His almighty power and through His own divine ingenuity. God truly has the right to say of everything He made, “All rights reserved.” The Lord our God not only has a right to own us spiritually, but also physically. He is to be recognized as the one who can, and will, provide us with all we need for body and soul. This is His sovereign and unique claim as the Lord and Creator of heaven and earth. Every last penny, all the real estate of the earth, the people of the world, the rivers, animals, grain and grass belong to Him. He allows us to use these things to further His kingdom and to give Him the glory and honour He deserves. This is how you and I ought to live: acknowledging God to be the Owner of all things. The Lord grants us permission to use what He has placed on this earth on the condition that we recognize He has patented everything to be used for His praise.
