In our secular culture of entitlement people have embraced the idea that they are “owed” and are entitled to have what everyone else has. Scripture, however, gives us a different point of view. The meek, and not those who think they are entitled to it, inherit the earth. It is given to them as a gift. Psalm 37 identifies the meek and specifies what they receive from the hand of God: “The meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”

Ironically, as soon as we think we deserve the inheritance, we have lost it because we are no longer meek. The meek are blessed with tremendous riches. In Christ we have a living hope and an eternal inheritance. And that, according to the beatitudes, should make us really happy! (Matthew 5:5) It needs to shape our attitude toward work, the purchase of property and personal possessions. The meek are not lazy but they are governed by the only standard of truth. That truth teaches them to look ahead, beyond the here and now, to the inheritance that is kept in store for them in heaven. They live in the certainty that the promises of the Lord made long ago to Abraham will be fulfilled. The earth belongs to the Lord and He will allow His children to enjoy its goodness.

The promise for the meek is accompanied by a calling to be meek. Paul writes in Colossians 3:12, “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long suffering.” The meek do not take the earth by force. Even in the face of persecution, believers are to leave matters in the hands of the Lord. The way to the inheritance can involve much hardship, suffering and abuse. Aware of the great mercy of the Lord we will speak with due humility to our children, neighbours and friends. As the apostle Peter says in his first letter, “...always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.” (1 Peter 3:15-16)

Meekness is the power of faith which patiently waits for the fulfilment of all God’s promises. Live each day in quiet expectation. Don’t envy those who prosper. Instead, yoke yourself to Jesus whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light. He is meek and humble in heart. When we are yoked to Him we will move in step with Him until the earth has been completely prepared as a dwelling place for God’s people.
