God’s Power Gives Great Inner Strength

Peter G. Feenstra

That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man. Ephesians 3:16

Bible Reading

Ephesians 3:14–21

Devotional

If you have ever taken the time to read through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians in one sitting, you may have noticed how often the apostle speaks of God’s power. In chapter 1:18–19 he draws our attention to this power of God when he says, “that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.”

Paul was able to fulfill his calling as a minister of the gospel “according to the gift of the grace of God given to me [him] by the effective working of His power.”(3:7) In Ephesians 3:14–21 the apostle prays that the congregation be strengthened by the riches of God. There is power coming from God at work in the church. Paul prays that this power of God might be the strength of every member to the very depth of their being (3:16). Paul makes this request and prayer because he is confident in the power of the Lord. There is no one who is mightier than God.

Sometimes we shudder at the strength of the devil but let’s never forget the strength of the Lord who carries us through every danger. Paul prays that we be strengthened in our inner being by the power of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit grants us the riches of God’s grace. Similar words are stated in 2 Corinthians 4:16. There we read, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” (NIV) Isn’t this amazing and fascinating? We are renewed and empowered for life. We grow stronger and stronger even as our bodies grow older and struggle with sickness and disease.

God’s power helps us in our weakness; it strengthens our inner being. Isn’t this a beautiful thing to take with us when we need surgery done or when we are feeling the aches and pains of growing older? We are frail containers pulsating with divine power! God is our strength.

May your life be filled with divine power so that no matter what the future brings (be it sickness, grief, hardship or even death) you may have great inner strength.
