Is there anything about your attitude that needs to change, allowing you to reflect a greater desire for oneness with other brothers and sisters? In Philippians 2:2, the apostle Paul impresses on our minds the need for unity. Not only are we to be like-minded, but we are also to have the same love for each other. Such love goes beyond an emotional attachment. It means to give of ourselves according to the talents and gifts God has granted to us, in order to meet the needs of others. Having the same love does not mean we all do exactly the same things, but the love which Christ demonstrated in laying down His life for the sheep permeates and pervades all our actions. We go the extra mile even if we have been personally hurt or wronged.

Those who seek to do all things in unity and harmony do not have an ambition to be prominent or take control but they have a passion for Christ, for His church, for peace, for advancing God’s kingdom and for glorifying God. Such individuals do not work by their own agenda but put the interests and well-being of others above their own.

In more ways than one the apostle reinforces the importance of unity in the body of Christ. Unity is essential for the spiritual growth of the church, for the progress of the gospel, and as a witness to the world. Where unity is lacking the reputation of the Lord Jesus Christ is put to shame. Out of love for Christ, we are to live together in unity, having a desire to work together. There may be times when we are convinced things should be done differently. Yet we need to ask ourselves, “Does my position and opinion contribute to the unity of Christ’s church or am I trying to get my own way? Is it possible that I am wrong?” Being part of Christ’s family means we must constantly examine the purity of our motives.

Notice how the apostle speaks tenderly to the Philippians. He directs them to the motivation for unity. Their unity is in the relationship they have with Christ. We are to do the same. If someone’s behaviour is unruly and unscriptural we may not simply talk about it to others. We are to deal with wrongdoing in a manner that shows we honour Christ and love our brother or sister. That is an approach which is Biblical, pleases God and will most certainly be for the benefit of all God’s people.
