Devotional

In this letter of Paul to the Colossians, the apostle pictures Christ in His glory as our Redeemer, as the head of the church and as the Lord of creation. Christ's lordship is truly stunning! The Son of God came down into this world to redeem sinners but He is, at the same time, Lord and Master of creation. The entire universe and cosmos is under His control and government. Jesus Christ our Saviour is the first-born over all creation.

In Christ all things were created, both in heaven and on earth. He has complete supremacy and power, which is exactly what verse 17 means: “He is before all things.” Being eternal God, He was before time and before any creature existed. Without Christ life would be unthinkable. All things in heaven and earth were created through Him and for Him—everything from the obedient angels, to those rebellious devils who seek to prevent His coming. Christ is the source, the means and the goal of all creation. He did not simply become the Son of God at His birth but existed before the beginning of time. He manages every atom and keeps the universe from chaos and confusion.

Nothing exists without Christ and nothing remains without Him either. Paul says, “In Him all things hold together.” (NIV) Christ is the One through whom God created all things and He is the One through whom all creation is preserved, maintained and governed. The laws and forces of nature are under His control. He is the power that holds and binds the entire universe together. You could say it this way: He is the glue keeping it all together. Without the binding power of Jesus Christ, the universe would split apart at the seams. Life would become chaotic and fall apart if He took His finger away for one split second.

Christ’s death is of cosmic and universal significance. The cross was not only erected to cancel our debts and to provide our souls with inner peace; it provides the guarantee and assurance that the universe will never fall to ruin but will be held together. What a great blessing to be members of a church where Christ is acknowledged as the One through whom all things hold together.
