It’s the final countdown! We are living in the last days and in the last stage of our journey through this life. Every hour and moment takes us closer to the end of world history as we know it.

The thought of the world coming to an end creates fear in the hearts of many, but it has never frightened the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s because God’s people have been following unseen footprints! The LORD has left His footprints all over the pages of history and nothing can stop Him from finishing what He has started. His footsteps are unseen to the human eye but with the eye of faith the church of Christ has seen His steps. The Lord marched through the land and walked through the sea (Habakkuk 3:12, 15). He left His footprints in the desert and by the rivers of Babylon. His footprints were in the temple and on the cross.

As church we know where we are going because we know where He is going! As we make our way down paths and highways, through the deep valleys of hard times and over the hills of joyous times, we follow the Lord’s leading. Sometimes we lose our sense of direction and we fail to pay attention to where we are going; our heads are down and we set ourselves up for personal injury. But the Lord repeatedly reminds us to follow His unseen footprints as we make our way to, and eventually through, the gates of the New Jerusalem. When we get to the gate we will be requested to leave our handkerchiefs and tissues behind. For God will wipe away every tear from our eyes. Death will be no more, all crying will stop. Sorrow and pain will be a thing of the past.

Throughout the journey we have been called to live by faith and not by sight. It is an act of faith and trust to follow unseen footprints. The people at the Red Sea, Ruth, Job, the psalm writers, the remnant in exile, the apostles, and the early Christian church – all the saints—lived by faith in those unseen footprints.

The journey is almost over now and we will soon see God in the face of Christ. It is the final countdown! With eager anticipation we look forward to the day when the footprints of our Lord and Saviour will be visible right in the place where we are (Rev. 21:3).
