Devotional

Where does the secret strength of faith lie? It lies in the food it feeds on.

Faith ponders what a promise is—an outflowing of God’s grace, an overflowing of God’s great heart—and faith says, “My God would never have given this promise except out of his love and grace. Therefore it’s quite certain that he will fulfil his Word.”

Then faith reflects on who gave this promise. It considers not so much how great the promise is as, “Who is the author of it?” She remembers that it is God—who cannot lie, who cannot fail, who cannot change—and therefore she concludes that the promise must be fulfilled. And she moves forward in this firm conviction.

Then she remembers why God gave this promise—namely, for his own glory—and she feels perfectly sure that God’s glory is safe, that he will never stain his own honour nor mar the brightness of his own crown. Therefore the promise must and will stand.

Then faith also considers Christ’s amazing work as being a clear proof of the Father’s intention to fulfil his Word. “He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Rom. 8:32).

Moreover, faith looks back on her own past, for her battles have strengthened her and her victories have given her courage. She remembers that God has never failed her; even more, that he has never even once failed any of his children. She recalls times of great peril when deliverance came. She recollects hours of awful need when her strength would equal her days (Dt. 33:25). And she cries, “No, I will never be led to think that he can change and leave his servant now. Thus far the Lord has helped me, and he will keep helping me.”

Thus faith looks at each promise in its connection with the Promise-Giver. And because she does so, she can say with assurance, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” (Ps. 23:6)!
