Living as if There is No God

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. —Psalm 14:1

Devotional

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” He says this in his heart. Even if he would never say this with his lips, it is still within his heart. From the heart the issues of life flow forth. So, he who leads a life without God shows that his heart is foolish. Man can even confess with the lips that there is a God, and be orthodox in doctrine, but if in daily life one lives without God, he is assuredly a fool.

It makes very little difference whether we are born in a Christian home or in a family of atheists. Neither does it make a difference if we are a harsh atheist or a decent church attendee. As long as we do not live with God, we are practical atheists and we say by our actions, “There is no God.” One cannot say in his heart that there is a God and yet be able to live without Him. It is foolishness.

The ultimate issue is not what our lips say but what our heart shows. The foolish denier of God lives in all of our hearts. This is clear when God’s ways in our life are contrary to our desires. As long as matters in our life go according to man’s wishes, it is not difficult to believe in God. But when God appears to be against us and our prayers are not answered, and it seems that there is no God in heaven, then man says, “There is no God.” Man only wants a God that will grant him his desires.

Are you wise instead of foolish? What is in the depths of your heart? Is your attitude against God? Is your heart still cold before God? Are you at ease as if there is no God? Can you still manage your affairs without God? Do you still live according to the pleasure of your own corrupt heart? Oh, what a fool you are to deceive yourself in such a manner! The time will come when you will realize that there is a God and He has the right to demand that you give an account of what you did in your life.

Wicked King Manasseh acknowledged that the Lord was God. We can do no less. We must learn to confess that there is a God who is entitled to our lives, and that we have sinned against Him and are in need of His forgiveness. If not, then we shall meet Him as our Judge.
