Confession of Sin

Devotional

We have sinned against God. We have forgotten God our Maker and have made ourselves to be gods. Retrace things in your own life. Everything revolves around you. This is the god whom we love and serve. Moreover, we can still be religious people. We can have the service of the true God in our mouth, but yet behind this, a selfmade god is honored in disguise. Do you acknowledge this? Do you need to confess your sins?

In confession of sin one needs to be in a right frame. That is the frame of humility, submission, and acknowledgement. In this frame it is evidenced that justice is on the side of God. Such a frame is a precious condition of prayer.

This true humility is indispensable; there is no other way to be saved. We must realize and confess: “We have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedly.” Therefore there is no better garment than the robe of humility, but no matter how low a sinner may bow, he cannot pay his debt with it. A robe of humility is indispensable, but it cannot pay the debt. Even though we bow ever so low before the Lord, this bowing down as such cannot be the ground for forgiveness of sin.

Man invents many ways to remove his guilt. A sinner will present all kinds of proposals to the Lord with the hope that God’s anger can be silenced against sin. When guilt becomes guilt in our life, man will try anything to satisfy God. We come with plans and sacrifices in order to satisfy God’s justice. But it is all insufficient before God. We have no remedy for our guilt. We can come no further than confessing: We have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedly. For such people there is a Savior who saves to the uttermost. He shed His blood as the only ransom for sin. It is for His sake that sinners may rejoice with Psalm 32:5, “I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.”
