God Remembered Noah

Frans Bakker

And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. —Genesis 8:11

Devotional

Genesis 8:1 says that “God remembered Noah.” Even as the ark was floating upon the waters and those in the ark saw nothing of a new earth yet, God was there. That is how it always is. Out of sheer grace, God remembers those who wait for Him.

Was Noah better than all those thousands who drowned in the flood? It is recorded later on in the account that even Noah fell into sin—the sin of drunkenness. The fact that Noah was spared from the flood was only possible because God remembered him. Yes, from eternity God remembered people that would so often forget Him, even after having received grace.

The basis of God’s grace was not found in Noah. It was only in Christ who cried out, “Why hast thou forsaken me?” God no longer remembered Him, so that He would be able to remember sinners. That is why that olive leaf was a fruit of Christ’s merits and not of Noah’s waiting for God. That is a lesson that all those who struggle have to learn.

They must realize that they can never be delivered because of anything of themselves. It must first become night before grace is given. If the dove had come at noon, they would have thought that God’s favor was because of their waiting. Night must come to show that God’s deliverance is real, and in this way His work will be glorified.
