THOU SHALT GUIDE ME WITH THY COUNSEL AND AFTERWARD RECEIVE ME TO GLORY

Henry T. Vriesen

FROM PSALM 42

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? … O my God, my soul is cast down within me … Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

FROM PSALM 73

Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a. clean heart. But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men … They say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches … When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me; until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end. Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction … Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

FROM PSALM 77

I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted. I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed … I have considered the days of old … I call to remembrance my song in the night … Will the Lord cast off forever? … Is his mercy clean gone forever? doth his promise fail for evermore? Hath God forgotten to be gracious?

… And I said, This is my infirmity … I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old … Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
