FOR UNTO YOU IS BORN IN THE CITY OF DAVID A SAVIOR, WHO IS CHRIST THE LORD

Henry T. Vriesen

Luke 2

When John, the son of Zacharias and Elizabeth, was about six months old, it came to pass that Joseph and Mary had to journey to Bethlehem. The Roman emperor, Caesar, who at that time ruled also over the land of Canaan, issued a command, that all the people of his empire should be enrolled; they should go to the cities and towns from which their families had come, and there to have their names recorded: Joseph and Mary were of the house and lineage of David, so they had to go to Bethlehem, the city of David, near Jerusalem. It was a journey of about eighty-five miles.

When Joseph and Mary came to Bethlehem, they found the city crowded with people, who had come from various parts of the country for the enrollment. The inn and all the lodging rooms were filled. The best they could do was to stay in a stable, where the cattle were kept. And there it came to pass that the great promise of God was fulfilled: the Savior of the world was born. It came to pass as the angel had announced. Mary wrapped the child in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger.

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord appeared unto them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel of the Lord said unto them, Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” Hardly had the angel finished, when the shepherds saw the sky above them filled with angels, praising God and saying, “Glory be to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

When the song had ended and the messengers of God had returned to heaven, the shepherds said one to another, “Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.” And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, “They made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning the child. And all that heard it wondered.” And the shepherds returned to their flocks, glorifying and praising God.
