Christ Our Wisdom

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:30).

Bible Reading

Proverbs 8:1-11:

1Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
2She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
3She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
4Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
5O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
6Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
7For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
8All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
9They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
10Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Devotional

Christ is made wisdom unto us. However wise we may think ourselves to be in spiritual things, we are ignorant and foolish. "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him." "They are altogether brutish and foolish." Christ upbraided his disciples: "O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken." Paul chides the Galatians; "O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth?" This then is our foolishness, that we do not believe and obey the truth of the Gospel. And since we are so foolish, God gave us Christ as our wisdom. He is the eternal Word and knows God, having been with him from eternity. "No man knows the Father save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him." But He does not reveal him unto the wise and prudent, but unto babes. Christ as the eternal Wisdom speaks to us in the book of Proverbs. Yea, in Christ "are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."

Prayer

O God our Father, we must confess before Thee, that by nature we are ignorant of the truth of God. May Thy Spirit, who searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God, enlighten the eyes of our understanding. May He lead us into all truth, and show us the treasures of wisdom and knowledge that are hid in Christ. May He impart unto us the wisdom from above, so that we may be wise unto salvation. Amen.
