Who Gave Himself for Us

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good worths (Titus 2:14).

Bible Reading

Titus 2:

1But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
2That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
3The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
6Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.
7In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
8Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
9Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;
10Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
13Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
15These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

Devotional

He gave himself a ransom. What is a ransom? A ransom is the redemption price; for instance, the price paid to set a slave free. By nature we are all slaves of sin and Satan. Christ came to pay the price of deliverance from sin and Satan. He gave himĀself to redeem us from all iniquity. He gave himself a ransom for many. Peter writes: "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation (useless ways), received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot." Since we know that, and since He who is our Father will also be our Judge, we should pass the time of our sojourning in fear. Christ redeemed us that He might cleanse us from sin. Only the blood of Christ can cleanse us from sin, as John tells us very plainly: "The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." Christ has redeemed his people, and He purifies them to be in a peculiar sense his very own. They are redeemed and purified, that they should be "zealous of good works, " eager to do God's will. "For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. "He makes us heartily willing and ready henceforth to live unto him." Heidelberg Catechism Q.1. "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." Therefore, to him belongs all the praise, now and for ever.

Prayer

Merciful God and Father, we thank Thee for the gift of Thy Son, that unspeakable gift. We glory in the great work of redemption, which He accomplished; that the ransom price is paid; and we are redeemed from all iniquity no longer to be servants of sin; but a people purified, zealous of good works. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
