It Is Finished

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost (John 19:30).

Bible Reading

Colossians 2:1-15:

1For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;
2That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;
3In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
4And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
5For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
6As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
7Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
8Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
11In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:
12Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Devotional

When Jesus came into the world, He came in his Father's name. His Father sent him. He tells us himself repeatedly that the Father sent him. Thus we read: "He that sent me is true." I am from him, and He hath sent me. Again, "Neither came I of myself, but He sent me." He was fully resigned to the will of his Father, and the Father gave him his work to do. He said, "My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work." Again He says, "I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me." The same was true of his doctrine. He said, "My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me." And yet again he said, "I must work the works of him that sent me." Even the words He spoke were not his own, but the Father's who sent him. In his high priestly prayer He tells the Father, "I have finished the work, which Thou gavest me to do." But he also says, and this we must not overlook, "I have glorified thee on the earth." That was his aim and purpose, that the Father might be glorified in the Son. Also in all his suffering He was fully resigned to the will of his Father. All He did and all He suffered was for us, and it is all finished. To be saved we have nothing to do but to believe on him. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved."

Prayer

Our Father, we thank Thee for the perfect work, which Jesus Christ accomplished for us. We thank Thee for all He suffered to atone for our sins. We thank Thee for the full and free salvation that is ours by faith in him. Help us to believe that Christ's perfect satisfaction, righteousness and holiness is our righteousness before Thee. For his sake. Amen.
