Sears, Roebuck and J.C. Penney Co.

2021

On this day in 1969, OPC Foreign Missions General Secretary John Galbraith was encouraging readers of the Orthodox Presbyterian Messenger to write Sears, Roebuck and Co. and J. C. Penney Co. to urge the retailers not to open their stores on Sundays. Sears had taken the step the previous month of opening its stores on Sundays for the Christmas season, and Penney's was quoted as saying that it would look at its policy in light of Sear's action. Galbraith argued, "It would be ironic if the Penney Company, founded and run for so many years by a man noted for his devout Christian faith, would so soon after his death turn away from his Christian principles."

The editorial closed with the addresses of Sears and Penney's with instructions to write Sears regarding their action and to write Penney's before they made their decision. It also encouraged readers to obtain the name of the local Sears or Penney store manager to register their opinion.
