OPC Helps MTI Korea

On this date in 1988, a team of Orthodox Presbyterian volunteers concluded twenty-five days of service helping the Ministerial Training Institute of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Seoul, Korea. Just three months earlier in the April 1988 issue of New Horizons, a plea from the Rev. Young Son, director of MTI, went out for volunteers to help. OPC members Mary Sweeney (Silver Spring, MD), Galen and Karen Danis (Vienna, VA), and Davette Laone (Sunnyvale, CA) soon volunteered, and were joined by the Rev. Charles Schauffele, his wife, Ruth, and Westminster Seminary students Yong Tai and Young-Ae Jin, and Jennifer and Hanyoh Kim.

The daily routine for the twenty-five days of service was rising at 6:30 a.m. for a prayer hour. Mr. Schauffele would then teach at 9:00 a.m, and again following lunch. The other volunteers taught English conversation classes and assisted Rev. Son and his wife, Mary Lou, with the many responsibilities involved in running the Institute.
