2021

Retired Orthodox Presbyterian missionary Young-Jun Son was born in Tokyo to Korean parents on this day. After World War II, Young graduated from Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea in 1955, then moved to the United States with $5 in his pocket. He worked to put himself through college and seminary, graduating with his bachelor’s from Geneva College in 1959 and earning a diploma from Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1962. He met his wife, Mary Lou, while studying at Westminster Theological Seminary in 1963. They married on April 17, 1964, and were blessed with six children.

Shortly after becoming a United States citizen, he was received into the OPC’s Presbytery of Philadelphia on November 16, 1968. He founded and directed the Philadelphia House, a multi-cultural student ministry, from 1972 until called to be a missionary to South Korea in 1977. In 1982, Young started and served as director of the Missionary Training Institute in Seoul, which trains Koreans for cross-cultural ministry as foreign missionaries. In 1983 he received his Masters of Theology and earned his Doctor of Theology from Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education in South Africa. After his retirement in 2000, the Sons continued as adjunct missionaries to Korea through 2009. Young also served as pastor of Murdock Memorial OPC in Bancroft, South Dakota from 2005 to 2016.
