Charlotte Kuschke

2020

On March 8, 1925, Charlotte Milling Kuschke was born in San Francisco to a German and English speaking household. As a teen, Charlotte began attending a local Presbyterian church at the invitation of neighbors. When she along with others in that congregation became convinced that their church wasn’t teaching true doctrine, Charlotte left and joined what would become First OPC, San Francisco, pastored by Rev. Robert Atwell. Upon graduation from San Francisco State, Charlotte taught in the public school system for a year and a half before deciding that she wanted to teach in an environment that integrated biblical instruction. Through Bob Atwell’s connections to Rev. John Galbraith on the East Coast, Charlotte became the first teacher at Kirkwood Christian Day School in Kirkwood, Pennsylvania.

Four years after her move east, Charlotte married Rev. Arthur Kuschke, longtime librarian at Westminster Theological Seminary. Together they raised three children, David, John, and Margaret. Charlotte also taught music and German at Cornelius Van Til’s Phil-Mont Christian Academy for thirty years. She assisted her husband and others in assembling the original Trinity Hymnal. During her time as choir director at Calvary OPC, Glenside (where she is still an active member), they recorded an album, “Concert of Sacred Choral Music.” Mrs. Kuschke was a frequent singer at the Boardwalk Chapel in Wildwood, New Jersey. One of her favorite Boardwalk memories was finding a luna moth. Her excitement drew a crowd!

On March 8, 2018, on her ninety-third birthday, Charlotte Kuschke entered the church triumphant where the praise of the risen Christ is sung without end.

Editor’s note: Today’s entry was written by Katharine Olinger. Read more about Charlotte Kuschke in Choosing the Good Portion: Women of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, which is available on OPC.ORG here.
