January 9 Today in OPC History

On January 9, 1927, Valerie Young (Knowlton) Murray was born in Augusta, Maine. Having graduated from Smith College in 1949, she received her Ph.D. in 1956 at the age of 29 from Harvard University. During her time in Boston, she was a member of the historic Park Street Church, pastored at that time by Rev. Harold Ockenga, a graduate of Westminster Seminary. She subsequently began taking classes at Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia, where she met her future husband, OPC minister and Westminster professor, John Murray.

They were married on December 7, 1967 and moved to Badbea, Scotland to raise a family. They had two children, Logan and Ann-Margaret. John died in 1975, and Ann-Margaret in 1976. In 1981, Valerie and Logan moved back to Maine and later became active members of Merrymeeting Bay OPC in Brunswick, Maine. On August 8, 2014, Valerie died and went to be with the Lord in glory.
