January 20 Today in OPC History

Bohemia, New York

On January 20, 2001, the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Bohemia, New York, was organized as a particular congregation by the Presbytery of Southern New York and Connecticut. Meindert Ploegman was installed as pastor. Herb Muether was installed and Steve Bozzo was ordained and installed as ruling elders to serve on the session with Mr. Ploegmann.

Both the church's and Mr. Ploegman's journeys in arriving at this point had been long ones. The OPC in Franklin Square had wanted to plant a daughter church in Long Island since the 1950s. Mr. Ploegman, a native of the Netherlands, came to the United States to study for the gospel ministry. He pastored Baptist and Evangelical Free congregations before coming into the OPC and serving as a ruling elder on the Franklin Square session for ten years.
