SUFFER LITTLE CHILDREN TO COME UNTO ME

Henry T. Vriesen

Matthew 18, 19, 26; Luke 10; John 12

The disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, and said, Verily, I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And who shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

“Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. And he laid his hands on them and blessed them.

“It came to pass, as they went (Jesus with his disciples) that they came to Bethany near Jerusalem. It was the hospitable home of Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha. Here Jesus was always a welcome guest. He went in to meet the two sisters. Mary sat at his feet, and heard his word; she was eager to learn about God and spiritual things. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him and said, “Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Now six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany into the house of Simon the leper. “There they made him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot … Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.” Many came to this supper “not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also.”
