Send Out Thy Light

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles (Psalm 43:3).

Bible Reading

Psalm 43:

1Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.
2For thou art the God of my strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
3O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
4Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.
5Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Devotional

The opposite of light is darkness; the opposite of truth is falsehood. If a man walk in the night he stumbles, because there is no light in him. "He that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth." Isaiah says, "we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness." Their sins were "transgressing and lying against the Lord, and departing away from their God ... conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood." Christ says, "There shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." There always have been and always will be deceivers.

The psalmist must have felt oppressed by the thick darkness that surrounded him, and by the heavy atmosphere of falsehood that settled down upon him. So he exclaims. "O send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me." In Psalm 119 we read. "The entrance of thy word giveth light." Wherever the truth of God's word enters, it dispels the darkness of falsehood. Again we read: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path.

The psalmist prays that God's light and truth may bring him to God's holy hill; that is the hill of Zion, where God dwells among his people. David says, "I cried unto the Lord, with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill." Again we read: "Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy." God says, "yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion." That is his Son Jesus Christ, who is the light of the world. He that followeth him shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life.

Prayer

O God, our Father, we would praise Thy name that Thou hast given us Thy Word as a light unto our paths. May we in Thy light see the light. Wilt Thou send forth men with Thy truth to open the eyes of those who do not yet know Thee, to turn them from darkness unto light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and inheritance among the saints. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
