Trust in God and Not in People

Peter G. Feenstra

Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be greatly moved. (Ps. 62:1–2)

Psalm 62

Devotional

As we take a closer look at Psalm 62 we notice that it has no requests or petitions. Most Psalms address God at some point with a petition or a prayer, but Psalm 62 does not.

The main focus of the psalm is encouragement. David encourages himself and the people of God to trust in the Lord God at all times, to pour out their hearts to the living God. The king advises his subjects to be leery of relying on others. Unlike God, people can be disloyal, untrustworthy and fickle.

It is somewhat difficult to be precise about the original circumstances of Psalm 62. From the inscription we learn that the psalm was penned by David. In verses 3 and 4 the king lets it be known that there are individuals within his kingdom who wish to see his demise. He writes, “How long will you assault a man? Would all of you throw him down—this leaning wall, this tottering fence? They fully intend to topple him from his lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouth they bless but in their hearts they curse.” David’s enemies challenge his God-given position of authority as king. They seek to topple him from the throne. With their mouths they bless and they shout, “Long live the king!” Nevertheless, their hearts are deceitful. Outwardly they are pleasant and friendly and people may be fooled to think they have the best interests of the church at heart. But they are two-faced.

King David tells us a little bit about his circumstances—just enough to let us know where to turn for strength and to underline the opening statement, “Only toward God is my soul still.” Pray that the Lord will always give you the strength to stand firm in this confession. Throughout your earthly journey people are bound to disappoint you and breech trust. Being attacked from within the church is extremely unpleasant, frustrating and difficult. When God allows you to have good and loyal friends remember to thank Him for them, but do not place your deepest hope in people. Instead, trust in Him who is eternal and unchanging, and you will never be shaken. In Christ, He provides you with a peace and quietude of heart that transcends all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
