Thinking about Things That Are True

Peter G. Feenstra

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Philippians 4:8

Devotional

When the peace of God which passes all understanding guards our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus our thoughts will be on good things. There are a number of matters to which our thoughts must be directed. We are to meditate on what is true, noble, just, pure, lovely and of good report. Our minds are to be preoccupied with “whatever is true.” When we think about whatever is true, we meditate on those things which speak of God’s grace in Christ. Our opinions are kept in check when regulated by the revealed truth of Scripture. Spiritual stability is gained through the contemplation of truth.

The Holy Spirit controls our minds through the truth of the gospel. In contrast, the devil tries to work his way into our lives through lying and deceit. He corrupts our minds by presenting things in such a way that they seem believable and credible. The only way we can think about what is true is by equipping our minds with the teachings of the Bible. People don’t usually follow the lie because they want to; it happens when they are no longer familiar with the truth.

Those who let their minds dwell on what is true recognize the folly of secular thinking. Our culture suggests, “God doesn’t care what you believe, as long as you are sincere. There is good in all religions. Truth is relative, so what is true for you may not be true for me.”

The Bible teaches us a different message. God’s Word is truth. Christ is the way and the truth and the life (John 14:6). The true worshippers worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:23). Our thinking is to be disciplined and trained by the Word of God and surrounded with prayer and love. The Holy Spirit needs to program our minds with the right material so that we begin to walk in the truth.

Think about God, meditate on His Word and sing the songs of the covenant with all your heart. Flood your mind with the truth, and evil thoughts will have no room to grow. When you fill your thoughts with the Word of the Lord you insulate your mind against falsehood, lying and all the deceitful works of the devil which threaten to assault you.
