The God Who Speaks

Peter G. Feenstra

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds. Hebrews 1:1–2

Hebrews 1:1–4

Devotional

When we go through troubling and trying times we want to hear the voice of God to guide us further. The book of Hebrews is a sermon prepared in response to a severe crisis. It addresses men and women like ourselves, people who live ordinary lives. This sermon begins by reminding believers that the Lord has already addressed their plight and spoken to their situation. They worship the God who speaks. “God who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things...”

The opening lines of this sermon bring us face to face with the God who speaks. The Hebrew Christians were troubled by the apparent silence of God but now they are confronted with the indisputable fact that God is the living God. He speaks and He addresses us with words of salvation. God is not silent. What God has done in Jesus Christ speaks volumes! The Lord demonstrates how deeply He cares for His people. The author guides these Hebrew Christians to listen carefully to the Word of God—to contemplate how serious it is to disregard the Word of the Lord Jesus. We need to give due attention to what the Lord says. To ignore what He says is to neglect salvation, hope and comfort in times of trouble.

The fact that the Lord speaks demonstrates that He has not abandoned His people. He makes His presence known through His Word. It is our responsibility as people of God to pay attention to the message of salvation delivered through God’s Son.

We need to witness and confess to the unbelieving world that the whole Bible is the message of the God who speaks. It is not composed by the impulse of people. From beginning to end Hebrews explains that our only hope and salvation is in Jesus who is identified as true God and true man and who is our wisdom, our righteousness, our sanctification and redemption (1 Cor 1:30). The Lord God speaks to us in His Word, providing us with a sure and certain foundation for our knowledge of salvation. Through the words of Holy Scripture, God speaks to us, even this very day. Let us listen carefully to the God who speaks.
