What is the worst thing that could ever happen to you? The worst calamity that could ever strike you is not having your children or friends taken from you, or being robbed of all your financial resources, or experiencing persecution, mass destruction or hunger. These are terrible things but the worst thing that could happen is that you should fall into the hands of an angry God.

To face the wrath of God apart from Jesus Christ is the worst catastrophe that could ever come upon anyone. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Outside of Him the whole of our existence and is in shambles. We are sinners in need of the grace and mercy of God. No human power can free us from our sin and misery. No one can deliver us from death or turn our darkness into light, our sorrow into joy, our mourning into dancing. Our entire salvation and eternal well-being is secured in Christ alone. We cannot save ourselves – not even through our best efforts. The salvation of our children is also not in our hands!

Knowing the worst thing that could ever happen we are impressed by the best thing that has happened. Christ came to this earth to bear the burden of God’s wrath against our sins. He takes us out of the danger zone and delivers us freely and fully. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” (John 3:16–17)

Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father! He rescues us from the wrath of God through His cross. As He says in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Thank God that the worst thing that could ever happen will not happen! Those who are in Christ have the best news ever. Jesus delivers us from the wrath of God and allows us to live in the knowledge that the best thing has already happened. God’s wrath has been appeased. That opens to us a door of comfort when we think it really couldn’t get worse.
