Blood

Peter G. Feenstra

Devotional

There are many things in life that we value! In times of prosperity we value commodities, precious metals, vintage cars, rare coins and famous paintings. Our perspective changes dramatically when faced with starvation. A piece of bread is of far greater value to a starving human than an extravagant vacation or a beautifully landscaped home.

What do you value most in your life? What do you hold close to your heart as a most precious treasure? The Lord Jesus says, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21) As Christians our treasure cannot be in earthly things, because in the perspective of eternity they mean nothing. What we need to treasure is blood! We don’t think much about our blood until we cut ourselves, but our blood is constantly performing a number of very important tasks. Blood is our life.

The blood of Christ is even more important than our own. His blood cleanses us from all unrighteousness and allows us to live in the presence of God. Since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, the author of Hebrews encourages us to draw near with a sincere heart and with the full assurance of faith (Hebrews 10:19, 22).

We cannot put a price tag on what Jesus did; our Saviour’s blood is of infinite value. This is why we speak of the precious blood of our Saviour. What makes Christ’s blood so precious? It is the only sacrifice for sin. Apart from the shedding of Christ’s blood there is no forgiveness and no life! After the fall and disobedience of our first parents, God did not ponder or wonder, “What would be the best way of saving sinners?” He did not pick from several different options of salvation, finally deciding on the death of Christ as being the best. The only way of salvation is through the blood of Christ.

When the angel of death came to the door of the Israelites in Egypt, he did not come looking for good deeds, but for blood—the blood of the lamb. The blood of the Lamb has been shed for us. Nothing else needs to be done. Treasure what you have. Knowing that Jesus’ blood was shed for you gives you the most valuable riches the world has ever known.
