TAKE, EAT, THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU

Henry T. Vriesen

Matthew 26; Mark 14; Luke 22; John 13

“On the first day of the unleavened bread, when they killed the Passover, his disciples said to Jesus, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the Passover? And he sendeth two of his disciples, (Peter and John), and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water; follow him, and wheresoever he shall enter in, say to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is thy guestchamber, where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples? And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: and there make ready for us. And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the Passover.

And in the evening, he cometh with the twelve. When the hour had come, he … said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. And the supper being ended … He arose and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then he cometh to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, shalt thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him … If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

“So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.

“And as they did eat, Jesus said, Verily, I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me, shall betray me. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.” And Judas Iscariot answered and said, “Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave it to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is given for you; this do ye in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper; and gave thanks, and gave it to them saying, Drink ye all of it: for this cup is of the new testament in my blood, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. This do ye as oft as ye drink of it, in remembrance of me.”
