From a Child Thou Hast Known

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:15).

Bible Reading

2 Timothy 3:

1This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
6For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
8Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
9But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was.
10But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
11Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
12Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
13But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
14But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Devotional

In this meditation I would like to talk to the children. I would like to tell them about a little boy who knew his Bible when he was still a small boy. This boy's name was Timothy. Shall we call him Timmy? How could this very young child know the truth so early? He had a mother and a grandmother who loved God's Word and believed it. And they taught Timmy its truths. And God worked faith in his heart, so that he had the same true faith that was in his mother and grandmother. When Timmy became a young man, they that believed in Jesus spoke well of him.

One day a great preacher came to the town where Timothy lived. The preacher's name was Paul. He was sent by God to preach to the people who had never heard of Jesus. Paul wanted Timothy to go with him, and help him in his work. So Timothy went along and preached. Paul and Timothy worked together like a father and a son. There was no one so dear to Paul as Timothy.

Dear children, if you have fathers and mothers and grandmothers who teach you the Word of God, you should be so happy and thankful. Please, read and study the Bible every day. It will make you "wise unto salvation." And maybe some day God will call you to bring his Word to those who do not know God. Would you not like to?

Prayer

Our heavenly Father, we thank Thee for Christian parents and Christian homes. We thank Thee for the faith Thou hast worked in the hearts of our little children; prepare them for Thy service, and send out many laborers into Thy harvest. Destroy the works of the devil, and preserve and increase Thy Church, until the full coming of Thy kingdom. For Christ's sake. Amen.

Scripture in Devotional: 2 Tim. 3:14, 15; 1:5; Acts 16:12; Phil 2:22; 2 Tim. 3:15.
