Octavius Winslow, 1856 (edited for
today's reader by Larry E. Wilson, 2010)
Bible Verse
"Sufficient for the day is its own trouble" (Matthew 6:34).
Devotional
It is a matter of much practical importance that you take heed not to anticipate or to pre-empt God's promised grace.
For every possible circumstance in which you may be placed, God provides the fullness of Christ and the supplies of the covenant. He only dispenses this provision as the occasions for which he provided it occur. Beware of creating trouble by jumping the gun.
Seen through the mist, an advancing object may appear gigantic in size, and terrifying in appearance. And yet the trouble you so much dread may never come. Or if it does come, it will assuredly bring with it the "word in season" (Prov. 15:23). In the case of every child of God, calamity never comes alone; it invariably brings Jesus with it.
Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine;
living with Jesus, a new life divine;
looking to Jesus till glory doth shine,
moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.
Refrain:
Moment by moment, I'm kept in his love;
moment by moment, I've life from above;
looking to Jesus till glory doth shine,
moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.
Never a trial that he is not there,
never a burden that he doth not bear,
never a sorrow that he doth not share,
moment by moment, I'm under his care.
(Refrain)
Never a weakness that he doth not feel,
never a sickness that he cannot heal;
moment by moment, in woe or in weal,
Jesus my Savior, abides with me still.
(Refrain)
(Daniel W. Whittle, 1840-1901)
