Morning Thoughts for Today;
or, Daily Walking with God

Octavius Winslow, 1856 (edited for
today's reader by Larry E. Wilson, 2010)

Bible Verse

"The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15).

Devotional

Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and he will save you. His compassion inclines him to save sinners. His power enables him to save sinners. His promise binds him to save sinners.

And, oh, how easy is it to be saved when the Holy Spirit draws your heart to Christ! It is not great faith that is required. It is not deep experience. It is not extensive knowledge. The weakest eye that ever looked to Christ, the feeblest hand that ever took hold of Christ, the most trembling step that ever traveled to Christ, possesses salvation now—possesses everlasting life. The tiniest amount of real faith will take your soul to heaven. Why? Because it is not the strength of your faith that saves you; it is the strength of the object of your faith who saves you!

Yes! There is hope for the trembling repentant sinner. Jesus suffered to the uttermost, therefore "he is able to save to the uttermost" every single one "who draw[s] near to God through him" (Heb. 7:25).

Jesus! what a Friend for sinners!
Jesus! Lover of my soul;
friends may fail me, foes assail me,
he, my Savior, makes me whole.

Chorus:
Hallelujah! what a Savior!
Hallelujah, what a Friend!
Saving, helping, keeping, loving,
he is with me to the end.

Jesus! what a strength in weakness!
Let me hide myself in him;
tempted, tried, and sometimes failing,
He, my strength, my vict'ry wins.
(Chorus)

Jesus! what a help in sorrow!
While the billows o'er me roll,
even when my heart is breaking,
he, my comfort, helps my soul.
(Chorus)

Jesus! what a guide and keeper!
While the tempest still is high,
storms about me, night o'ertakes me,
he, my pilot, hears my cry.
(Chorus)

Jesus! I do now receive him,
more than all in him I find,
he hath granted me forgiveness,
I am his, and he is mine.
(Chorus)

(J. Wilbur Chapman, 1910)
