the Rev. Henry Huenemann
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night (Psalm 1:1-2).
Bible Reading
Psalm 1:Devotional
The wicked take delight in wickedness. "Through the pride of his countenance, he will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts." His whole life is a life without God.
The righteous has nothing in common with the wicked. He will not have fellowship with him. He gives heed to the admonition of Solomon: "Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men." He says with the psalmist. "I hate the assembly of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked." He keeps himself unspotted from the world.
"His delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night." Such delight is pure delight. "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul." "The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart." The righteous can say with the psalmist, "I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches;" and, "I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word."
Dear reader, do you and I know the great joy, the pure delight, that comes from studying the Word of God, and meditating upon it? If so, we are blessed for time and eternity, for this joy no man can take from us.
Prayer
Our Father, we pray, deliver us from all worldly mindedness. May we realize, that the world passeth away, and the lust thereof, and that worldly pleasures cannot satisfy. May we therefore set our affections on things above, on things that are promised us in Thy Word. May Thy Word be our delight; may we rejoice in the way of Thy testimonies as much as in all riches. Thus may our spiritual wellbeing be furthered, and Thy name glorified. For Christ's sake. Amen.
