Devotional

There are three important events that bring relatives together: births, marriages, and deaths. The Lord Jesus Himself was invited to attend a wedding. He was asked to be present at a special time of joy. It is a good thing to have need of the Lord Jesus both in times of grief and in times of great joy. We can lay all our needs and sorrows before the Lord, but it is a good thing also to lay our joys before the Lord.

The Lord Jesus accepted the invitation and came to the wedding. He brought His disciples along. It seems amazing to us that the first public event the Lord Jesus and His disciples attended was a wedding. The first miracle the Lord Jesus did was change water into wine. That is surprising to us.

What a difference this is from Moses, the mediator of the old covenant. The first sign Moses did was to change water into blood. The first sign that the Mediator of the new covenant gives is to change water into wine. What a great difference this is! Moses comes with the law to proclaim man’s guilt. But the Lord Jesus comes to give joy. He comes to give abundant life. He takes the curse of the law and gives the blessing of the gospel. He takes the sorrow of man and gives the joy of God’s salvation. He changes the curse into a blessing. That is why it is so fitting that Jesus starts His public ministry at a wedding. He comes to give joy. He comes to lead sinners to the marriage supper of the Lamb.

We observe that the Lord Jesus did not elevate Himself above others. He, in identifying Himself with man, experienced the realities of everyday life. He came to earth to consecrate our common daily lives to God. God works in the everyday matters of life. Do we understand this? We need the Lord not only for spiritual blessings but for everyday existence. Do we see our need for His grace and His blessing in all our daily activities? God is not only a God for the soul but also for everyday life. He is the best Friend in our homes and in our daily lives. Do you need God for the smallest matters of everyday life?
