Jesus saith unto them, Fill the water pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.—John 2:7
Bible Reading
John 2:1–11Devotional
The Lord Jesus attended a wedding at Cana. While there, a problem occurs. The hosts run out of wine. The Lord instructed the servants to fetch six water pots which the Jews used for their purification ceremonies; they held twenty to thirty gallons each. The Lord Jesus commanded them to fill these six water pots with water. The total content was changed into wine. Now the hosts have more than enough wine for the wedding.
A typical wedding in Israel would last one week, but now, if they wished, they could celebrate for weeks if that would have been feasible. This sign shows the abundance that Christ gives. He Himself had said, “I have come that they would receive life more abundantly.” We see this demonstrated here before our very eyes. The master of ceremonies at the wedding in Cana tastes the wine, and realizes that the wine now being served is far superior to that served at the beginning of the celebration.
Christ always gives the very best. He gives the best last, while the devil gives pleasure first and afterwards leads men into sorrow. In this sign, the Lord Jesus demonstrated His glory. His disciples believed in Him. It is not that they believed in the miracle, for that would have only been a miraculous faith. The record says they believed in Him. They saw in Him the Messiah and believed in Him with a true saving faith.
This wine was a sign of the abundance of the kingdom of heaven. It was a sign that Jesus was the Savior. It is His honor to give deliverance. It is His honor to save the needy and give life and abundance. In contrast, the devil serves his prey sweet wine from the start. As time goes on, he serves misery. Finally, the devil gives such a bitter cup of wormwood that his victim is unfit for eternity. The Lord keeps the best for last and His last sign will be to change this old, sinful, cursed earth into a new earth in which righteousness will dwell.
What joy it will be to taste heavenly wine at the marriage supper of the Lamb! People of God, you now have only a foretaste of that joy. The blessings God gives now are only a prelude to what He has in store for His people. There are times when they long to be in heaven. It is not because it can be so bad on earth but because it can be so good on earth. The goodness they experience is a foretaste of God’s fullness for them. It is amidst this goodness that they desire to attend and celebrate the marriage supper of the Lamb.
