Proverbs 15–3
“Apples of gold in pictures of silver” so Solomon’s Proverbs have been called. We continue to hear more of them: “The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath … A man’s heart deviseth his way; but the Lord directeth his steps … Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall … He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city … The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe … Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.
He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again … The rich and the poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all … A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold … By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life … He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity; and the rod of his anger shall fail … Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set … Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge … My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways … Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding … Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his color in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver … If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: for thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee … Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him … Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth … The full soul loatheth a honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him … Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he … The fear of man bringeth a snare; but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe … Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.”
