The Undefiled in the Way

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart (Psalm 119:1, 2).

Bible Reading

Psalm 119:1-16:

1Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.
2Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.
3They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.
4Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.
5O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!
6Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.
7I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.
8I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
9Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
10With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
11Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
12Blessed art thou, O LORD: teach me thy statutes.
13With my lips have I declared all the judgments of thy mouth.
14I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.
15I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.
16I will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.

Devotional

Here we have a double beatitude. Because we are hard of hearing, or do not pay attention, God is gracious enough to repeat what He has spoken. By this repetition we are assured of the truth of God's Word. "The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple." Some one has translated the word "blessed" as, "O, the happiness of"! Who are they that are so exceedingly happy? "The undefiled in the way." But who is undefiled? "There is none righteous." "All have sinned." "We are all as an unclean thing and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags." We are clean; we are righteous; we are perfect only in him, who died for us and rose again. Those are the undefiled, who sincerely confess their sin and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, whose blood cleanses from all sin. They walk in the law of the Lord and keep his testimonies. They believe the record that God gave of his Son. "And this is the record that God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son." So they seek not themselves, their honor and glory, but they seek the Lord with the whole heart. "He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." This testimony they believe, and say with the psalmist, "Thy testimonies have I taken as an heritage forever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart."

Prayer

O Lord, open Thou our eyes, that we may behold wonderous things out of thy law. Help us to seek Thy face. May we seek it with our whole heart. Hide not Thy face from us. Leave us not; neither forsake us, O God of our salvation. Help us to meditate on Thy precepts, and have respect unto Thy ways. May we delight ourselves in Thy statutes, and may we not forget Thy Word. Deal bountifully with Thy servants, that we may live, and keep Thy Word. We ask it for Jesus' sake. Amen.
