No Peace — Abundance of Peace

the Rev. Henry Huenemann

There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked (Isa. 57:21).

The meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace (Psalm 37:11).

Bible Reading

Psalm 37:1-11:

1Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.
2For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.
3Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
4Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
5Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
6And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
7Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
8Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
9For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.
10For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
11But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Devotional

We are living in a time of wars and rumors of war. And yet, how the nations of the world long for peace! Great sums of money are spent, and mighty organizations are formed to establish peace in the earth. They say, "Peace, peace, but there is no peace." They "look for peace, and there is no good: and for the time of healing and behold trouble!" All human effort can not avail. In order to have peace on earth, there must be peace in the hearts of men. This peace Christ alone can give. He is our peace. He has made peace between God and man through the blood of his cross. He is the Prince of peace. And where He reigns, there will be peace between man and man. He says, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you." Peace can dwell only where righteousness prevails. "The work of righteousness shall be peace." Christ has fulfilled all righteousness through his perfect obedience and vicarious suffering and death. Through faith in him we have righteousness and peace. And where this precious gospel is proclaimed and believed by the nations of the world, there "they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more." Christ shall establish his everlasting kingdom, and there shall be abundance of peace.

Prayer

O Lord, our God, Thou hast established Thy throne in the heavens, and Thy kingdom ruleth over all. We thank Thee that Thy kingdom cannot be moved. Grant unto us grace, that we may serve Thee acceptably with reverence and godly fear. And may Thy peace, which passeth all understanding, keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen.
