Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life (John 8:12).

John 8:12-20:Devotional
How helpless we are, when we have lost our way in the dark. We hardly dare to take a step, lest it be our destruction. How different it is when the sun shines brightly, and we can see all about us. Thus it is spiritually. Christ is the light of the world. Outside of Christ all is darkness. Christ is revealed in the Word of God. Hence his Word is, "a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path." And as we learn to know Christ and confess his name, we are the light of the world, not in ourselves, but in Christ. "Ye are the light of the world." "For ye were sometime darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord; walk as children of light." "Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light." By believing in the light we have life. Christ, who is the light, is also the life. "In him was life; and the life was the light of men." Life cannot exist in darkness. Place a plant in the dark and it will die. Separated from Christ we lie in the midst of death. Only he that followeth Christ "shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
Prayer
Our Father, help us to be true followers of Jesus Christ, for then we shall not walk in darkness. Grant that we may have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but may we let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good works and glorify Thee, our Father, who art in heaven. May we make faithful use of Thy Word, so that it may be constantly a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our path. Lift Thou up the light of Thy countenance upon us, and thus may we walk in the light of Thy countenance, and rejoice in Thy name all the day, and in Thy righteousness be exalted. For Jesus' sake. Amen.
